On Heaven and Pain

In light of another suicide by a young person, (Rick Warren’s youngest son,) I started thinking about pain and Heaven.  When I was small the only pain I ever felt was when I broke my foot or if I skinned my knee.  I didn’t think much about Heaven other than singing Sunday school songs like, “We are climbing Jacobs Ladder.”  Then I imagined how beautiful Heaven must be and how wonderful it would be to see the angels.  Also I resolved that I would be a “good solider of the cross” and I would climb Jacobs ladder to Heaven.

But as an adult I developed painful headaches after I started teaching school.  I had played school as a child with my obedient sister and we always had a good time.  I was always the teacher and she was always the compliant student.  (She is the only one in our family to earn a Masters Degree.)  But in reality most kids are strong willed and don’t obey.  As a real teacher in a real school I felt like I was trying to round up greased pigs.  Every day I prayed that God would fill me with love for these children and that they would respond to that love.  When they did not obey I prayed that God would close the mouths of the lions and He did!  They simmered down and would sometimes do what they were supposed to do.  But there were so many variables that very few days went smoothly.  After 3 years of full time teaching I quit and went to work at the library, and the headaches went away.

During that time one of the principals at one of the schools where I taught lost a thirteen-year-old son to suicide.  I just couldn’t imagine such a thing happening.  I thought such a thing must be very rare.

Then, because of emotional pain due to difficult relatives, I began to ask God to take me home like Elijah did.  I wanted to sit under a tree like he did and be taken care of instead of living a balancing act trying to love those who were not lovable.  I thought about murder but I knew that was wrong.  I trusted God that He would deal with those who were oppressing me.  He would be my defender.  In the long run God would take care of everything.  Next I asked God for a vacation—He supplied us with trips to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the south Pacific.  He provided above and beyond anything I could ask for or imagine.

Then the physical pain of fibromyalgia set in.  I couldn’t keep up the pace of doing all that I was doing because of the pain.  I went through all the stages of grieving.  Everyone tried to “fix” me.  No one understood and that added to my pain.  After 30 years most realize I can’t be fixed.

At that point a fifteen-year-old kid in my son’s junior high committed suicide.  I feared for the lives of these young kids.  I couldn’t imagine the pain of those parents.  How could this boy do that to his parents?! I started praying with a Moms in Prayer group for the school.  It was too much to bear alone.

Some friends lost their adult sons to suicide.  One friend lost her brother to suicide.  A man my husband worked with committed suicide.  Then the radicalized Muslims started more and more suicide bombing.

Now every so often I see a TV show, a movie, or read a book where someone commits suicide.  Do we have an epidemic on our hands?

But God can and does use pain for good.  Before the pain I experience on a daily basis, I thought Heaven was nice, but now, because of the pain, I yearn to be in the house of the Lord.

Psalm 84: 1 How lovely are Your dwelling places, O LORD of hosts! 2 My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. 3 The bird also has found a house, And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, Even Your altars, O LORD of hosts, My King and my God. 4 How blessed are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You.

I look forward to the time when --Revelation 21: 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.

Meanwhile, I trust God with my life.  I pray for all of those who are in pain because of the loss of a loved one, and for those who are just in pain.  I pray that Jesus will come back soon.

Should Christians Vote for Republicans?

When it comes to voting, Christians must carefully review what each party stands for in light of Scripture.

The Republican Party stands behind Israel.  Here is what the platform says:

Our Unequivocal Support of Israel
Israel and the United States are part of the great fellowship of democracies who speak the same language of freedom and justice, and the right of every person to live in peace. The security of Israel is in the vital national security interest of the United States; our alliance is based not only on shared interests, but also shared values. We affirm our unequivocal commitment to Israel’s security and will ensure that it maintains a qualitative edge in military technology over any potential adversaries. We support Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state with secure, defensible borders; and we envision two democratic states – Israel with Jerusalem as its capital and Palestine – living in peace and security. For that to happen, the Palestinian people must support leaders who reject terror, embrace the institutions and ethos of democracy, and respect the rule of law. We call on Arab governments throughout the region to help advance that goal. Israel should not be expected to negotiate with entities pledged to her destruction. We call on the new government in Egypt to fully uphold its peace treaty with Israel.
The U.S. seeks a comprehensive and lasting peace in the Middle East, negotiated between the parties themselves with the assistance of the U.S., without the imposition of an artificial timetable. Essential to that process will be a just, fair, and realistic framework for dealing with the issues that can be settled on the basis of mutually agreed changes reflecting today’s realities as well as tomorrow’s hopes.

Here’s what scripture says:

In God’s word we are told in Genesis 12: 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

Looks like a no brainer to me—Republicans support Israel so Christians should support Republicans.

Next we see that Republicans believe in preserving traditional marriage:

Preserving and Protecting Traditional Marriage
The institution of marriage is the foundation of civil society. Its success as an institution will determine our success as a nation. It has been proven by both experience and endless social science studies that traditional marriage is best for children. Children raised in intact married families are more likely to attend college, are physically and emotionally healthier, are less likely to use drugs or alcohol, engage in crime, or get pregnant outside of marriage. The success of marriage directly impacts the economic well-being of individuals. Furthermore, the future of marriage affects freedom. The lack of family formation not only leads to more government costs, but also to more government control over the lives of its citizens in all aspects. We recognize and honor the courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, even as we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage. We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity.

Scripture says:

In God’s word it says in Genesis 2: 18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." 19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

In Romans 1 the Bible talks about man’s rebellion against God and then it says in Romans 1: 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

Again it is clear that Christians should support Republicans.

Next Republicans support:

The Sanctity and Dignity of Human Life  (Top)
Faithful to the “self-evident” truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life. We oppose the non-consensual withholding or withdrawal of care or treatment, including food and water, from people with disabilities, including newborns, as well as the elderly and infirm, just as we oppose active and passive euthanasia and assisted suicide.
Republican leadership has led the effort to prohibit the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion and permitted States to extend health care coverage to children before birth. We urge Congress to strengthen the Born Alive Infant Protection Act by enacting appropriate civil and criminal penalties on healthcare providers who fail to provide treatment and care to an infant who survives an abortion, including early induction delivery where the death of the infant is intended. We call for legislation to ban sex-selective abortions – gender discrimination in its most lethal form – and to protect from abortion unborn children who are capable of feeling pain; and we applaud U.S. House Republicans for leading the effort to protect the lives of pain-capable unborn children in the District of Columbia. We call for a ban on the use of body parts from aborted fetuses for research. We support and applaud adult stem cell research to develop lifesaving therapies, and we oppose the killing of embryos for their stem cells. We oppose federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
We also salute the many States that have passed laws for informed consent, mandatory waiting periods prior to an abortion, and health-protective clinic regulation. We seek to protect young girls from exploitation through a parental consent requirement; and we affirm our moral obligation to assist, rather than penalize, women challenged by an unplanned pregnancy. We salute those who provide them with counseling and adoption alternatives and empower them to choose life, and we take comfort in the tremendous increase in adoptions that has followed Republican legislative initiatives.

 Here’s what Scripture says:

Exodus 21: 22 "If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide.

Isaiah 44: 2 Thus says the LORD who made you And formed you from the womb, who will help you, 'Do not fear, O Jacob My servant; And you Jeshurun whom I have chosen.

Psalm 139: 13 For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. 14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; 16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

Psalm 51: 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.

Jeremiah 1: 5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations."

Luke 1: 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1: 31 "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.

So it is plain that in light of Scripture Christians should vote for Republicans.

Now I would like someone to prove to me that the Democratic Party Platform is one that Christians should support.  If you can do this please provide scripture to back up your assertions.  The link is here: http://www.democrats.org/democratic-national-platform

Freeing the Oppressed

Just watched an academy award-winning movie from 1947 called “Gentlemen’s Agreement” staring Gregory Peck.  It depicted how Jewish people were marginalized here in the United States.  Nothing was said but it was an agreement between non Jews that  Jews were to be excluded from restaurants, hotels, clubs, and housing.  The message of the movie was that we must not just go along with the crowd.  If we believe something is wrong we should stand up for what is right.

I attended high school with many Jewish people.  I wasn’t even aware that they were Jewish until years later.  Now I’m praying that they will know that Jesus is the Messiah.

Listened to a sermon by Peter Hubbard pastor of North Hills Community Church in Greenville, SC.  He talked about oppression.  There are so many being oppressed that we don’t even know about.

This blog tells the story of Christians who are oppressed:  http://www.persecutionblog.com/

Albinos in Africa live in fear because of superstition and murder: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/nov/16/tanzania-humanrights

In the Czech Republic Roma women are sterilized without their knowledge: http://www.un.org/en/letsfightracism/gorolova.shtml

Then there are the homosexual activists and abortion minded and those who approve of such things who are under slavery to sin.

Many Christians are working to right these wrongs.  Jesus, when He was here, read this prophesy in the temple: Luke 4:18 "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, 19 TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD."

We can be free in our souls no matter what is happening to our bodies.  I pray that the oppressed will hear the Good News and follow Jesus.  Meanwhile, only by the power of the Holy Spirit will the freeing of the oppressed be done on earth until Jesus comes!

God is Winnowing out the Tares

      Warning Against Refusing God
14 Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears.
The time is short.  Jesus will be here soon!  May all the prodigals come into the fold before it is too late!

Taking Responsibility

The situation was that big sister was opening little brother’s birthday present.  Feeling powerless he let others know about the situation.  Upon advice from parents he took responsibility and succeeded in retrieving his own present and opened it.  Big sister was advised that, "Watching is helping."  Now in our family we don’t lay the blame we just say, “Mistakes were made.”  Here is what Dr. Ben Carson’s mother taught him:

Yourself To Blame

by
Mayme White Miller

If things go bad for you
And make you a bit ashamed
Often you will find out that
You have yourself to blame

Swiftly we ran to mischief
And then the bad luck came
Why do we fault others?
We have ourselves to blame

Whatever happens to us,
Here is what we say
"Had it not been for so-and-so
Things wouldn't have gone that way."

And if you are short of friends,
I'll tell you what to do
Make an examination,
You'll find the faults in you...

Your the captain of your ship,
So agree with the same
If you travel downward
You have yourself to blame

Optimists and Pessimists

-Frederick Langbridge, 1896

"I feel like there's a need for both optimists and pessimists. An optimist might get stuck in mud or drown while trying to get a better view of the sunset or stars!" Jes Brown

March Snow

One year we had snow in April.  The flash turned everything blue!
